How To Improve Poor Employee Performance

If you own your own business, sooner or later you are going to have to deal with an employee that does not meet your professional expectations.

Sometimes, even when you have an employee recognition program set up for your business, this still does not guarantee that every employee will be hard-working and meet your standards. If you are faced with an employee who is performing poorly, such as excessive tardiness, missed deadlines, or inappropriate behavior, it should be addressed right away.

Addressing the situation with the employee as soon as possible can help prevent your other employees from being affected. If one employee sees a co-worker who constantly comes in late every day, why is the employee going to want to follow the rules, if the other employee doesn’t? As the business owner or manager, you need to address the issue with the employee in private, as soon as it becomes an issue.

Don’t beat around the bush, but come right out and tell them what exactly is wrong with their performance. Then, allow the employee to explain to you their side of the story or the reasons why they are performing poorly at work.

After you have heard the employee’s side of the story, state what your expectations are for him. If necessary, provide them with the necessary tools to meet those expectations. Depending on what the issue is with your worker, you may have to take more measures that ensure that they are on the right track. This employee may need closer supervision for awhile. This may mean that you have to check their work before any of it goes out to clients. Let your employee know when they are improving and heading in a positive direction. Positive feedback is one of the best things that an employee could receive from their boss. Also, giving a business gift to show them how you are happy about their improvement may make them work even harder. Check into any additional training that you may be able to offer this employee.

If you find that after all of this extra effort, your employee is still performing poorly, it may come down to you letting that employee go from your business. In the end, you have to do what is best for your business. You don’t want one person to gradually bring your business down after you have worked so hard to build it up. If you have tried to help the employee and they are resisting the help, it is not worth your time and effort to try to change that person.
