Dressing for Success? Casual Fridays

business men and womenOver the past decade there has been a shift in what is acceptable corporate dress. Just as so many things have seemed to become more casual so has dressing for work. In fact, casual Fridays are so acceptable that many companies have begun to embrace the idea. You can even find a more casual corporate look the rest of the week in many places.

Many places that have, in the past, had the reputation of being staid, traditional, and businesslike (banks come to mind) are now friendlier, more casual, and less businesslike in their push to be friendlier and more approachable. There is just something odd about discussing your long term financial plans with a twenty-something dressed in jeans and a polo shirt!

How can you convey a friendly, approachable company and still maintain the businesslike authority that your company may need? The answer depends a lot on the type of business that you have and your clientele. Different people, cultures, and age groups will have different perspectives on what is and is not appropriate.

Should you allow a casual Friday? Again, know your clientele. Even though many companies are doing that it may be better for your company to maintain a traditional business look. This is especially true if you have a company that deals in financial matters, insurance, and other items that people need to feel secure about.

If you choose to allow a casual Friday, consider maintaining a secondary dress code. If your employees normally wear suits, for example, then allow dress pants and tailored shirts without the jacket. Take a survey of your clients to see what their thoughts are on the subject.

Casual Fridays may be the new, in thing, and may be popular among many companies but that doesn’t mean all companies should make the change. Move slowly and consider carefully the changes you make so that you don’t create a financial faux pas. Just as you choose your company advertising carefully, and just as you give careful thought to promotional items, it is important to carefully consider the image that your employees present to your customers and clients.

It could make a bigger difference than you think.

Casual Fridays are a great way to get people motivated on a hard-to-work day. I am a fan and think that it brings a lot of joy in the workplace. Even business casual (nice slacks and a blouse or dress shirt) is better than a full suit! Thanks for spreading the casual Friday word.
