bee

I know a guy who works as a company representative and who is very successful at his job. His success is due to many factors, but there’s one in particular that has always impressed me: he never forgets the worker bees.

When this guy was in school, even back to elementary and middle school, he was savvy enough to make friends with the most important people in the building. The Principal? Teachers? Nah, he made buddies with the lunch ladies and the custodians. This paid him dividends throughout his scholastic career, as forgetting his lunch money was no longer an issue, nor was going home without his notes to study for tomorrow’s big test. Lunch trays were filled and doors were opened because this guy did not forget the worker bees.

As a company rep he is just as mindful of the many people he encounters in his job every day who can bring him business or chase it away. Every business has worker bees. They answer the phones, greet the customers, open the mail, deliver the messages, and send the faxes and emails and so on. They keep the business running, while the marketers are marketing and the administrators are administrating. They are the front line to the public and they are, sadly, almost always overlooked.

What would it take to boost the morale of your company’s worker bees? Not much, actually. A personal note, thanking them for their unwavering service, would be so appreciated on their anniversary date. Even better, send them a nice gift

that shows they are noticed and their work is valued.

But don’t wait for the anniversary date! You will boost morale and increase productivity just by keeping these members of your team informed and included in day-to-day or week-to-week plans. An email blast to each staff member is a great way to accomplish this, but faxing or phone calls work well, too. The key is connectivity.

Make it a point as you go about the business of doing business to include the worker bees. You may find, as my friend still does, that doors will open and business will increase for you!
