gas prices

Those were the days!

I admit it; I don’t understand how the oil industry works. All the lessons we have learned about our free market society, supply and demand, etc. seem to go right out the window where this segment of our economy is concerned. And although it would be tempting to wish that we could our run our businesses the way Big Oil does, we know that it is just not possible, mostly because it just does not make sense.

Just this week we have seen the lowest price for crude oil in a very long time. As a matter of fact, since July 11 the price for crude has fallen 37%, amounting to $55 per barrel. Wouldn’t it stand to reason that if the price the oil companies are paying has dropped, so should the price they are charging us at the pump? Admittedly, prices are lower than the $4.00 +/- threshold that we hovered around earlier in the summer. As Americans we slowed our consumption and saw the price begin to fall. That is a good thing.

But in the past few days, despite per barrel prices continuing to fall and usage continuing to decline, the price at my pump has actually risen.

I suppose Ike is to blame. Funny how the price went up before Ike made any actual impact on the Gulf at all. He was still just a swirl on my Weather Channel screen when prices crept up.

Now don’t get me wrong. I’m glad to be paying less now than I was in July. But I’d like to be paying 37% less like the oil companies are. That would mean my price at the pump would be down around $2.50 a gallon right now. Instead, my price just rose 10 cents a gallon based on events that hadn’t even happened yet.

I know, I know, the issue is way more complicated than that. But just for awhile, I wish common sense would prevail and the same rules would apply to the big guys that we little guys have to abide by.
