Employee Motivation

Let’s face it: times are hard.

Most businesses are finding it necessary to cut spending in every way possible to improve the bottom line. It may be tempting to cut spending on employee incentives and motivators as well, but is it prudent? Perhaps getting to the root of what really motivates employees in today’s economy will help settle the dilemma.

As everyone is aware, it costs more today just to get to work than it did a year ago. Gas prices have increased dramatically. In many cities, the cost of public transportation has risen. As a result, many companies are looking at more flexible scheduling for their employees. Is it feasible to offer a four verses a five day work week? Some positions would lend themselves well to working from home, at least on a partial-week basis. The money saved in gas alone would be tantamount to a raise for your employee.

Another way to show appreciation for your employees, as well as helping their bottom line without hurting yours, is by offering them discounted rates on services and goods through third party companies that will partner with you.

For example, you may find an insurance company that will offer discounted auto/homeowners insurance policies to your employees. The insurance company sells several new policies, your employees get their rates at a discount and often have the benefit of direct-payment. You have provided a valuable benefit with no cost to the company. Similar deals can be found on services such as cell phones and travel agencies.

Of course, money isn’t everything. Don’t overlook the real value of making your employees feel like they are a necessary part of your team. Help them see where they fit into the big picture. Maintain close contact at each level, and don’t just write or call or visit when there is a problem.

Find reasons to pat your employees on the back, make sure they know you are pleased with their efforts, and let them know how they can improve. Ask for their opinions and use their ideas when possible.

In such a positive working environment you will reap the benefits of having loyal, motivated and empowered workers. It’s worth a try!
