Implementing an Employee Awards Ceremony

Giving employees incentives to work smarter is an important part of motivating your employees.

You can take that a step further by implementing an employee awards ceremony. A great time to do this is just before the holidays. There are a few steps that you need to take if you are interested in creating this program.

Decide how big this ceremony is going to be. Will it be for employees and their families? Will you serve food of some sort?

Send out a memo or hold a short meeting to make sure that all of your employees are aware of the ceremony, who is eligible, and how it will work.

Decide what things you are going to give awards for. Specific things like sales figures may deserve an award but things like motivating other employees, loyalty, and long term employment all deserve recognition as well. Rather than choosing a limited number of people that you can reward try to find ways of awarding the most people. Make sure that your employees know what things will garner which awards. Make some of them fun, like this chocoholic desk accessory.

Never put yourself in a position where it looks like you are choosing the employees that get the awards. Favoritism, even implied favoritism can tear your company apart form the inside.

Let others at the ceremony know what the employee did that was so incredible. This can act as positive peer pressure to imitate them to work harder and smarter.

Most of all, whether it is a formal sit down dinner or a more casual store meeting don;t forget to make it fun. Let it be something that your employees look forward too every year.
